camera shot and angle (screen prints ideas from other MV)

A Fine Frenzy- 'Almost Lover'.

close-up (animation on right) contains just one character's face. This enables viewers to understand the actor's emotions and also allows them to feel empathy for the character. This is also known as a personal shot.
An extreme close-up (animation on right) contains one part of a character's face or other object. This technique is quite common in horror films, particularly the example above. This type of shot creates an intense mood and provides interaction between the audience and the viewer.
mid shot (animation on right) contains the characters or a character from the waist up. From this shot, viewers can see the characters' faces more clearly as well as their interaction with other characters. This is also known as a social shot
bird's eye angle (animation on right) is an angle that looks directly down upon a scene. This angle is often used as an establishing angle, along with an extreme long shot, to establish setting.

Costume Preparation

We fixed up different potiential outfits that priya (girl in video), could wear -outfits that compliment the video narrative and genre.
here is what we put we got.

chic vintage - would give the video abit of edge, fashional yet simiple
casual girl neext door -
casual chic
indie retro

ARTIST OUTFIT
We didnt plan to much on what robbin was going to wear, beacuse the classic indie outfit for a music video would be a shirt/t-shirt and jeans - i think wel just go with this :D

HAIR AND MAKE-UP (finale look)

An indie hair cut ,plus geek-chic glasses and simple make-up

giving our self allacated roles during the production, these are the different role that have to be taken - as we are only three in this group we would have to take on more the one role each.

The director is primarily responsible for the storytelling, creative decisions and acting of the film. (ME)

The assistant director (AD) manages the shooting schedule and logistics of the production, among other tasks. There are several types of AD, each with different responsibilities. (LAYLAH)

The casting director finds actors to fill the parts in the script. This normally requires that actors audition. (ALLY- as he will be going around our 6th form and drama students looking for an potiental cast)

The location manager finds and manages film locations. Most pictures are shot in the controllable environment of a studio sound stage but occasionally, outdoor sequences call for filming on location. (ME, LAYLAH)

The production manager manages the production budget and production schedule. They also report, on behalf of the production office, to the studio executives or financiers of the film. (ME,- as will be reporting back to my media class on our progress)

The director of photography (DoP) is the cinematographer who supervises the photography of the entire film (ME)

The production sound mixer is the head of the sound department during the production stage of filmmaking. They record and mix the audio on set - dialogue, presence and sound effects in mono and ambience in stereo.(ALLY)

The production designer creates the visual conception of the film, working with the art director.(ME, LAYLAH, ALLY- we will go through this together as a group)

The art director manages the art department, which makes production sets. (ME- my role was to pay a visit to the drama department, and choose props and set up the mise-en-scene)

The costume designer creates the clothing for the characters in the film working closely with the actors, as well as other departments. (ME- as i will be making sure Robbin and Priya (cast) are dressed in certain cloths and in the style that I have chosen - we will throught it before the shoot)

The make up and hair designer works closely with the costume designer in addition to create a certain look for a character.

The storyboard artist creates visual images to help the director and production designer communicate their ideas to the production team. (LAYLA- as she will draw up the animatics of the music video)

The choreographer creates and coordinates the movement and dance - typically for musicals. Some films also credit a fight choreographer (ME-as i will be directing both the actors on movement and acting)

I hope everyone sticks to their given role :D

(mise-en-scene) Locations

LOCATION 1

Location 1 - Will be in the school theatre, were we will have to arrange a set design in order to create a living room with furniture and other props. We chose to set the scene in the theater rather then an real living room because we wanted a small impact, not so spacious living room to focus more on the artist. Also it will be more effective in terms of lighting, as we could lights and equipment that we might not be able to use in a real living room. However the main reason is that we wanted a vintage old living room ,therefore it would be easier to create one using old furniture and give it an autumn warm feel.  the purpose of the choice of theme was for it to compliment the song which is  about relationship break up and how their 'falling to pieces', therefore the old living room applies that they are looking back at old memories and that time and made it harder.

This is my Mood Board for Location 1 - all inspired by vintage/retro photography
These are the different props and furniture iv found ,that i might use in my set design, in location one

An old settee, 19th century style along with old fashioned cushions -the actor (Robin) might be sitting on it while he performs.

Draft  Set Design

We have rearranged a draft of how we want the set deign to look like and how long it will take to put it together and remove it agin after wards. however we did not like the black curtains at the back and the black floor as it made it more stage like rather then a living room.

LOCATION 2

Around Coventry City centre- the urban industrial side of it.
These are just to give us an idea before hand, so we know what to look for and where to film.

Vimoe and Myspace

copyright issues is very important when dealing with work that is not your own .Here i have tryed to contact the band and get there permission, however they never replyed.

I have made a Vimeo account, as it is the only video sharing website that is accessible at school times. I have made it to uphold any of my A2 Media video that i have made that relate in some way to my final music video production, so i could receive comments and opinions criticisms or complements from other film makers.

different concepts and ideas - split screen (reaserch vids)

different concepts and ideas -stop motion (research and testing)

a2 media- stop motion (a-punk (vampire weekend)) from ownis on Vimeo.

As me and my group have may consider stop motion in making our moving pictures music video , I therefore wanted to test and experiment the length of time it would take and how accurate do the pictures have to be in order for them to create continuous movement.

It’s made up of about 136 pictures and took 2 hours to make. This will give me an insight of how my music video will be the time scale and the amount of pictures I would need to fill the 3 minutes. I used windows movie maker to put it together and a basic camera. While using movie maker I had to speed the paste of each picture by seconds in order for my video to be incessant I failed to create an accurate continues stop motion video in some places, as some pictures do not directly follow each other in movement. This is a error I will defiantly consider while making my own music video if we do make a stop motion video. I will share this experience with my group and take some measure in order not to repeat the same mistake.

The main things I’ve learned from making this video, is that It is very important to have a very patient person that will stay still throughout the photo-shoots. Every precise movement of the actor (in order to imitate realism) should be taken a photo of in order to keep a continuous flow. So the process would be less time consuming, the actor should know what they will be doing beforehand. (As I made my video up as I was going along, therefore it took me along time). I will have to make my video on the apple Mac, as it will then allow me to do more things on it, as I was very restricted on ‘Window Movie Maker’.

Video Mindmaping

Idea to inspire our music video

Chosen genre - background info- reseach video types

POP ROCK

Pop Rock is a music genre which mixes a catchy pop style, of light lyrics, in its (typically) guitar-based rock songs. There are varying definitions of the term, ranging from a slower and mellower form of rock music to a subgenre of pop music. Scholars have noted that pop and rock are usually depicted as opposites; the detractors of pop often deride it as a slick, commercial product, less authentic than rock music.

pre-production

Elements of Pre-Production

Elements of Pre-production

Finance
Finance is one of the most important elements in the process of moving images. As it determines the scale of the production.  I will be working on a fixed budget that will come from different sources and funding. I would have to put a separate budget on each component that contributes to the production, such as the setting, cast, props, workers on and of set, and most importantly the equipment used (camera, lighting, sound system est.)

Our main funding body would be my educational institution, which will provide me and my group with the technical resources. Me and my group however will have to provide everything else for example cast, setting, and props (costume, make-up est.)

Time scale
I would have to consider time as an key element as I don’t have much of it, due to the short time I have between now and my deadline date to produce the music video.

Not only is my time fixed for the whole production process in a large scale but also for how long it would take for each task, for example: shooting. As renting out equipment and materials would have to be used effectively in a short period, otherwise it would be very costly.

In order for me to be ahead of everything I would have to organise my time well. Doing beforehand research on each task and how much time it would potentially consume. I would have to set some mini deadline for the completion of each task.

Also In order to complete tasks in time we as a group would have to divide tasks between us and allocate different jobs/roles to each one of us.

Personnel
The personnel’s are what bring the whole production together, after each been given an allocate role/job, and every feature would need a person with the right skills in order to bring the music video to a professional standard, personnel’s are (both workers and cast) need to work together as a body in order to meet the requirements of the protectors, directors and the music artist.

Workers are chosen by profession and skills, however cast (models and actors in the video) would have to be chosen by how compatible they are with the treatment, storyboard and main theme of the song. The target audience would have to be consisted while choosing the cast.

Facilities
The outcome of the video will be determined by the faculties used, however facilities are not only about the equipment used such as lights, cameras, sound systems, and the technical resources, but also how accessible are the people working on set to facilities such as toilets, food and shelters (cabins for example), as filming may take hours. Therefore cast and workers must be insured in working in a safe, comfortable location.

Material
Any sort of prop or material that will be used in the music video will have to be picked carefully, putting into consideration the theme of the song, song lyrics , cast in the video and most importantly target audience .So if they  all complement each other, the music video would be effective and successful .
Each prop has to have a reason in appearing in the video ,and to contribute to the mood and realism of the atmosphere.

Locations
Location would be the hardest element, not only on were it is and how to get their. But also the permission regulations you would have to go through before filming there. Location and materials together balance each other to create a sense of realism to the video. It sets the scene and clarifies the treatment to the audience. Many locations would have to be visited before hand to measure space, height and how they would be used. Many music videos have more then one locations, were some are for the general public, and were people might become an obstacle throughout the filming. This would have to be consisted and permission would have to be taken from the local council

Codes of Practice and Regulation
-Copy right laws and regulation: - were work that belongs to other people such as soundtracks would need copyright permission from the owners before featuring them in the video.

-Health and safety regulations: - the location were most of the of the personnel’s including cast and everyone working in the production, would need to be checked. As they have the right to be In safe locations at all times therefore locations have to be checked before hand. Even after they have and all the material and equipment are set up, the place has to be hazard free.

MTV

MTV
Is a Music Television channel, an American network based in New York City with MTV sister channels all around the world. It was launched August 1, 1981 with the purpose of playing music videos guided by on-air hosts.
MTV had a profound impact on the music industry and popular culture, with the idea that music turns visual. A 3 min track turns into a 3 min video - a canvas were music artist can express there music in a into moving pictures entertainment. MTV is there performance stage.
It became a central location for music events for musicians and their fans.

Music Video's that made History

A music video is a short film or video that accompanies a piece of music. Modern music videos are primarily made and used as a marketing device intended to promote the sale of music recordings. Although the origins of music videos date back much further, they came into prominence in the 1980s, when MTV based their format around the medium. Prior to the 80s, these works were described by various terms including "illustrated song", "filmed insert", "promotional (promo) film", "promotional clip" or "film clip". In Chinese entertainment, music videos were simply known as "MTVs" because the network was responsible for bringing music videos to popularity in that country.Music videos use a wide range of styles of film making techniques, including animation, live action filming, documentaries, and non-narrative approaches such as abstract film. Some music videos blend different styles, such as animation and live action. Many music videos do not interpret images from the song's lyrics, making it less literal than expected.
1960–1967: Visual innovation-
In the late 1950s[6] the Scopitone, a visual jukebox, was invented in France and short films were produced by many French artists, such as Serge Gainsbourg, Françoise Hardy, Jacques Brel, and Jacques Dutronc to accompany their songs. Its use spread to other countries and similar machines such as the Cinebox in Italy and Color-Sonic in the USA were patented. In 1961, for Canadian show Singalong Jubilee, Manny Pittson began pre-recording the music audio, went on-location and taped various visuals with the musicians lip-syncing, then edited the audio and video together. Most music numbers were taped in-studio on stage, and the location shoot "videos" were to add variety.
1967–1973: Promotional clips grow in importance-
The monochrome 1966 clip for Bob Dylan's "Subterranean Homesick Blues" filmed by D. A. Pennebaker was featured in Pennebaker's Dylan film documentary Don't Look Back. Eschewing any attempt to simulate performance or present a narrative. Many "song films"—often referred to as "filmed inserts" at that time—were produced by UK artists so they could be screened on TV when the bands were not available to appear live. Pink Floyd were pioneers in producing promotional films for their songs including "San Francisco: Film" , directed by Anthony Stern, "Scarecrow", "Arnold Layne" and "Interstellar Overdrive", the latter directed by Peter Whitehead, who also made several pioneering clips for The Rolling Stones between 1966 and 1968. In the UK The Kinks made one of the first "plot" promo clips for a song.
1974–1980 – Beginnings of music television-
United Kingdom-
The long-running British TV show Top of the Pops began playing music videos in the late 1970s, although the BBC placed strict limits on the number of 'outsourced' videos TOTP could use. Therefore a good video would increase a song's sales as viewers hoped to see it again the following week. In 1980, David Bowie scored his first UK number one in nearly a decade thanks to director David Mallet's eye catching promo for "Ashes to Ashes". Another act to succeed with this tactic was Madness, who shot on 16 mm and 35 mm, constructing their clips as "micro-comedic" short films.

 1981–1991: Music videos go mainstream

In 1981, the U.S. video channel MTV launched, airing "Video Killed the Radio Star" and beginning an era of 24-hour-a-day music on television. With this new outlet for material, the music video would, by the mid-1980s, grow to play a central role in popular music marketing. Many important acts of this period, most notably Adam and the Ants, Duran Duran and Madonna, owed a great deal of their success to the skillful construction and seductive appeal of their videos.

1992–2004: Rise of the directors

In December 1992, MTV began listing directors with the artist and song credits, reflecting the fact that music videos had increasingly become an auteur's medium. Directors such as Michel Gondry, Spike Jonze, Stéphane Sednaoui, Mark Romanek and Hype Williams all got their start around this time; all brought a unique vision and style to the videos they directed. Some of these directors, including, Gondry, Jonze and F. Gary Gray, went on to direct feature films. This continued a trend that had begun earlier with directors such as Lasse Hallström and David Fincher.
