‘Her Morning Elegance’ – Oren Lavie
image
-          ‘Her Morning Elegance’ made 2009 in stop motion style where the video consists of a series of still photos manipulated to suggest movement after played continuously.  It’s directed by its music artist Oren Lavies, as the video is set in a fixed setting, allowing only some props and actors to move. It is set on a mattress were sheets, pillows and cloths are manipulating to change to things, giving the video a narrative.
-          There isn’t a set story-line or a narrative, however it is more of a sequel of random routines after the actress wakes up ,as she goes through different experiences This is created through the movement of the props around the actress, also the shapes and forms they come in. The mise-en scene is all shot on a white mattress, therefore different scenes and moods are created through the use of different colour’s sheets (as they change) and the movement of pillows, socks and people. The fragmentation of the objects movement around the actress (and her movement as well) shifts with the soft music creating a sense of elegance to the video which is what seems like the music videos theme. As the video shows her sleeping at the start and sleeping at the end the treatment of this music video could be that its some kind of dream she wakes up in, or out. As the song title may suggest – that it’s a girl that wakes up in the morning and then going through creative but not realist experience.
-          However there is no obvious connection between the lyrics and the video, as the lyrics do not describe nor narrate what’s happening in the video. Making the video look ironic, which have been done to focus on the creativity of the video. The fact that the video and lyric’s contradict in some way makes it interesting.  The lyrics do not narrate what’s happening in the video, it sets a theme to it, to add to the neutral fresh, peaceful atmosphere.
Unlike other mainstream genres that belong to a sub-culture, were the people that belong to it follow certain dress codes, different use of dialogue, and symbols that are universal to all the people belonging to that sub-culture. For example a heavy mental rock band would stereotypically wear piercing and tattoos and would lean to darker colored cloths. However ‘her morning elegance’, couldn’t be categorized into a certain sub-culture, as Oren Lavies music is considered as Acoustic/Indie/Alternative. Oren doesn’t represent nor belong to a culture which is constructed through dress-code or other things. Therefore his audience would just be any types of people that take an interest in alternative ideas to the mainstream genres.
The colours used in this video are very neutral, mostly whites and blues, which creates a ‘fresh and pure morning’ atmosphere which goes with the song title and the theme.
Most of the video is taken from one angle which is bird eyes angle –(camera looking down), however due to the stop motion effect it makes it look like it’s a wide-shoot 2D angle to the audience, as it seems as if the images are take from the flat side. There is only one focus in this video which it the motions that the actress and her surroundings (the props) go through while their in a fixed place. Therefore there is no artist/band focus which would normally be used in other videos for sales and promoting purposes. The video is consistent on one angle shot (bird-eye view) , however at the start at 0:09-0:16 the photographer uses different camera angles starting with close-ups then extreme close-ups, high- angle shots and wide-angles shots .This creates a balance to the video putting more focus on the actress face before her movement.

How I will use this video’s technical construction in my own music video :
-  The idea of stop motion;-
Stop Motion:  Stop motion (also known as stop action or frame-by-frame) is an animation technique to make a physically manipulated object appear to move on its own. The object is moved in small increments between individually photographed frames, creating the illusion of movement when the series of frames is played as a continuous sequence. Clay figures are often used in stop motion for their ease of repositioning. Motion animation using clay is called clay animation or clay-mation) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stop_motion
